A loud bang from the garage, then a door too heavy to lift, usually means a spring has broken. On a torsion spring you may even see a gap where the coil has split. Our Torsion Spring Replacement and Extension Spring Replacement cover either kind of door. If yours has two springs and only one went, we'll usually change both, so the new spring isn't working against a worn one.
If the opener hums and the door stays where it is, stop pressing the button. That's often a broken spring too, and an opener isn't built to haul the door's full weight by itself.
A lift cable that's frayed, slack, kinked or off its drum means the door stays closed until our Cable Repair has dealt with it. Once a cable snaps, that side of the door loses its spring support, and the door can hang crooked, jam, or drop without warning. If it has already slipped out of its tracks, our Off-Track Door Repair takes that on as well.
Closer to the coast, salt air and humidity eat at springs. If you spot rust on one before anything has failed, book a Tune-Up and Safety Inspection.
A failed spring or cable can leave the door stuck open with the house unsecured, or stuck shut with your car inside. Either way, call and ask for Door Stuck Open or Shut, and for 🎟️ our emergency repair coupon.
Whatever you find, don't loosen a spring or try to put a cable back on its drum. Springs and cables hold enormous tension, and adjusting them is a job for our technicians.
People Also Ask
- Do you replace both torsion and extension springs?
- Yes, both kinds, and we repair and replace the lift cables that work with them.
- Only one of my two springs broke. Why change both?
- A fresh spring next to an old one strains the old one, so on a two-spring door we usually replace the pair.
- Can I use the opener to lift a door with a broken spring?
- No. The opener can't carry the door's whole weight, so leave it switched off and give us a call.
- Is it safe to keep running a door with a frayed cable?
- No. A damaged cable can fail and let one side of the door drop, so keep it closed until it's repaired.
- Is a broken spring an emergency?
- Yes, when the door won't lift, and more so when it's stuck open or your car is shut in. Mention the emergency repair coupon when you call.
- How soon can a technician get to me?
- Within an hour of your call, day or night.
- Which areas do you cover?
- Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach County.
- Are you licensed?
- Yes. Our license number is CBC1266379.
